Bill Palmer's new-found friends at BBC Radio Solent event

Hundreds of people have attended a community BBC event inspired by Bill Palmer, the pensioner who caused an internet sensation when he phoned his BBC local radio station to talk about his loneliness.

Mr Palmer, 95, from Southampton, called the Alex Dyke show on BBC Radio Solent about his life after his wife went into a nursing home.

The presenter immediately ordered a taxi to bring him into the studio. Footage was shared and attracted media interest around the world.

The Big Christmas Cuppa was organised by the BBC to provide information and support to elderly people in a similar situation.
