Support for marriage certificate change grows

Tens of thousands of people have now signed a petition started by a Hampshire woman to change the format of the marriage certificate.

The current document used in England and Wales has been virtually unchanged since the 1830s and only includes details of the fathers of the bride and groom.

Ailsa Burkimsher Sadler from Eastleigh is leading a campaign to have mothers' names included.

The calls have been echoed by clergy and genealogists. The Home Office said it is considering options.
