Families on the brink as the UK's housing crisis bites

The acute shortage of housing in Britain has been underlined by figures obtained by BBC News.

Local authorities - already under financial pressure - are facing a huge increase in the costs of dealing with the crisis.

And charities say the number of people needing emergency shelter is rising at an ''alarming rate''.
