Flood defences 'did not fail during December storms', MPs told

Flood defences were "tested beyond their design" during the recent storms but they saved lives and did not fail, Environment Agency bosses have said.

About 16,000 homes in England flooded in December following record rainfall.

Chairman Sir Philip Dilley, criticised for holidaying in Barbados during the crisis, admitted it "would have been better" to have returned earlier.
