Britain's last deep coal mine Kellingly Colliery closes

Coal mining was at the heart of Britain's industrial revolution, an industry that once employed well over a million people.

But Friday will mark the end of deep cast coal mining in the UK, as Kellingly Colliery in Yorkshire closes its gates for the last time.

Chief correspondent Gavin Hewitt looks back at Britain's coal mining history and examines the economic future of those communities which have relied on it.
