Emotional cruelty law 'needed to protect children'

The government should introduce a new offence aimed at combating "significant" emotional cruelty to children, Conservative MP Robert Buckland has said.

The proposed change to laws regarding neglect in England and Wales would see parents who deny their children affection, face prosecution for the first time.

It follows a campaign for a Cinderella Law from charity Action for Children.

Speaking to the Today programme, Mr Buckland dismissed claims that it would be difficult to prove or define emotional bullying, stating the importance of "witness evidence".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday 31 March.
