Maori king refuses 'inflexible' royal visit

The king of the Maori people has refused to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their tour of New Zealand because the 90 minutes allocated with the royals was insufficient time to include "a full ceremonial welcome", spokesman Tukoroirangi Morgan has said.

Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme, he said the decision to call off the meeting was a "major disappointment" to the king, but the "faceless bureaucrats" surrounding the British royals had not been "flexible".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 5 March.
