Airports Commission chair on expansion and runway ideas

Views on expansion and new runways submitted to the government-appointed Airports Commission have been wide ranging and interesting, the panel's chairman said.

Sir Howard Davies added that the responses show clearly the wide spectrum of views that exist.

His comments came as the commission published a summary of the responses it had received for south east England, which have included proposals by Heathrow bosses to build a third runway.

Sir Howard, a former head of the Financial Services Authority, is due to present an interim report on UK airport needs by the end of this year, and a full report in summer 2015.

He said that "it is very important that what we propose are with the climate change policies that have been legislated."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 7 August 2013.
