UK troops to serve longer Afghan tours, says Hammond

British troops will start serving longer tours in Afghanistan from October, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has announced.

Soldiers deployed this October will serve up to nine months instead of the usual six months.

Mr Hammond told the House of Commons the move was a practical measure as the UK prepared to withdraw from Afghanistan next year.
