County council vetoes underground waste storage plan

Plans to move ahead with the next stage of building an underground nuclear waste storage facility in Cumbria have been rejected.

Although Copeland Borough Council had approved stage four of the process - the search for an appropriate site - Cumbria County Council vetoed any move to stage four.

Cumbria County Council leader Eddie Martin told the BBC there were "a number of safety concerns", and that investment to improve existing facilities at Sellafield were a higher priority.
