Irish prime minister to hold a confidence vote

The Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen has refused to resign, despite party unease over his handling of the economic crisis.

He will hold a confidence vote in his leadership on 18 January.

But hours after his announcement, an opponent emerged - the Foreign Minister Michael Martin.
