Snow and cold cause disruption across north of England

Hundreds of schools have closed and dozens of motorists have been stranded across the country due to heavy snow.

South Yorkshire has been particularly hard hit overnight with up to 25 centimetres of snow in some places.

In Sheffield schools are closed and bus services suspended across the city.
