Volunteers could earn 'care credits'

Ministers are considering a ground-breaking system of "care credits" where people who do voluntary work will be rewarded with extra support in their old age.

The idea is based on a system in Japan, where volunteers earn credits by providing help such as hot meals or personal care for the elderly.

They can later redeem them for their own needs, or those of an elderly parent.

Keith Doyle reports.
