Pope leaves Rome for UK state visit

Pope Benedict XVI has boarded a plane in Italy to begin the first ever papal state visit to the UK.

His first stop will be Edinburgh where he will meet the Queen at Holyroodhouse and parade through the city before an open-air Mass in Glasgow.

His visit, which is due to attract well-wishers and protests, will also take him to London and Birmingham.
