Scientists confirm armadillos' giant ancestor

Prehistoric giant dome-shelled creatures have been linked to modern armadillos found in South America.

Scientists say DNA analysis revealed that what were thought to be distant cousins should in fact be considered a subfamily.

The glyptodonts roamed South America for millions of years until the last Ice Age. Some grew as big as cars and would have dwarfed even the largest armadillo alive today.
