Forest laboratory studies immune system in live voles

Patches of the Kielder forest in northern England are being turned into wild research laboratories to study how the immune system of wild forest rodents are affected by the environment.

The hope is that it will give new insight in to environmental triggers for human diseases like asthma and allergies.

Scientists from the University of Liverpool are capturing and studying field voles, following them throughout their lives to find out what makes each individual more or less vulnerable to infection.

Victoria Gill reports.
