Could your umbrella become a rain gauge?

A Dutch scientist has come up with a prototype of an umbrella that is also a rain gauge.

Rolf Hut from Delft University of Technology says that a smart brolly, which would send information to a computer via a phone, could help researchers who rely on a dwindling number of scientific rain gauges.

He explains how his prototype - which uses a child's umbrella - works.
