Paterson: Green groups being 'negative' on government

The government is failing to deliver on many of its commitments to protect the natural environment, a report from umbrella group the Wildlife and Countryside Link says.

Organisations including the WWF, RSPB and RSPCA say more needs to be done on green belt protection, animal welfare and marine conservation.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson told the Today programme that there are areas the government "have gone backwards, there are areas we're advanced".

Mr Paterson agrees with some of what the environmental groups have said, but thinks "they've really been very hard and negative on us".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 19 November 2013.
