In the summer of 1942 a remarkable concert was staged in Leningrad.

While the Soviet city was under siege from German forces, a scratch orchestra of starving musicians gave a performance of Shostakovich's newly-written seventh symphony.

Olga Kvade, who was then 18 years old, was in the audience.
