Sonification: Representing data through music
Musician and physicist Domenico Vicinanza has described to BBC Radio 4's Today programme the process of representing information through music, known as "sonification".
Mr Vicinanza, arts and humanities manager at the Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe (Dante), explained that by mapping data to musical notes, with higher numbers representing a higher pitch, he is able to create a melody.
He added that sound can have "more information than any graph or picture".
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 31 January 2014.
