Picture This: Health and the human body through the ages
Through the centuries, humans have strived to represent the body, and the practices of treating disease, old age, and injury.
From early "spiritual" drawings of the human body, to contemporary MRI brain scans, our quest to document and portray how our bodies work is a universal practice.
Sir Henry Wellcome, founder of the Wellcome Collection in London, gathered art and artefacts from across the globe in the late 19th and early 20th Century, amassing a vast collection to document all the facets of medicine.
His collection is a veritable cabinet of curiosities, ranging from the forensic to the artistic.
Emma Shackleton, co-author of The Art of Medicine: Over 2,000 Years of Images and Imagination, takes us through artistic and instructive representations of the body through the ages.
This book explores work from the collection and beyond, giving its readers a vivid and diverse picture of health and medicine through the ages, and across continents.
