Should pregnant women need ID in hospital?

A London hospital is proposing rules which could mean women would need to show photo identification or proof of their right to remain in the UK before receiving care.

St George's Hospital in Tooting says it treats a high number of patients from overseas and it is not checking effectively enough in non-emergency cases whether they are eligible for NHS treatment.

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen tells The World At One the hospital's stance is welcome, but Elizabeth Prochaska, who chairs campaign group Birthrights, says the move could deter some vulnerable people from seeking care.
