Colchester Hospital 'under sustained pressure'

The chief executive of Colchester Hospital University NHS Trust has said a "major incident" was declared at Colchester General Hospital because it had been "under sustained pressure in terms of bed capacity and needed to take swift action to discharge patients quickly".

Speaking to BBC Essex on Friday Dr Lucy Moore denied that any patients that should not have been discharged were sent home.

The CQC raised "safeguarding concerns" following an inspection on Wednesday.

The watchdog found staff struggling to cope with "unprecedented demand".
