NHS England chief Sir David Nicholson 'became the story'

The outgoing NHS boss in England, Sir David Nicholson, has said that "becoming the story" after the publication of the Francis report contributed to his decision to retire.

Some campaigners called for him to resign after serious failings were found at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Sir David came under fire for his role as the regional health boss for Stafford Hospital for some of the time when patient care was neglected.

In a speech to the NHS Confederation conference in Liverpool, he said he has been under "enormous scrutiny".
