Rise in whooping cough cases prompts vaccination re-think

Health officials are considering vaccinating newborn babies against whooping cough because of a dramatic rise in cases this year.

More than 3,500 cases have been reported in 2012 - a third of those in July alone.

The Department of Health said expanding the vaccination programme was one option being looked at, but any decision would not be taken lightly.
