John Cale on drugs and feeling trapped

Stephen Sackur talks to John Cale, a founding member of The Velvet Underground, and a solo artist and producer.

He recalls a dark time in his life of depression and heavy drug taking. He says he now realises the drugs hampered his creativity and it wasn't until the birth of his daughter that he realised he had to "wake up" or miss the best parts of her life.

HARDtalk can be seen on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel.

If you or someone you know are feeling emotionally distressed, the following organisations offer advice and support.
