Martin Amis on Salman Rushdie fatwa 25 years on

Twenty-five years ago Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian religious leader, pronounced a fatwa to the effect that anyone murdering the British author Salman Rushdie would be doing God's work.

The Ayatollah objected to the author's novel The Satanic Verses because of what he viewed as insults to the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

The author Martin Amis told BBC Newsnight the reaction to the publication of the book was "a nightmare" for Salman Rushdie.
