General election 2019: Why are constituencies such strange shapes?

You may know which constituency you live in, but do you know why it's shaped the way it is?

If you look at electoral areas from above they vary hugely in shape and size.

The Boundary Commission for England is in charge of coming up with the constituencies and take a variety of factors into account.
