Birthplace linked more to academic success than social class

Children's educational achievement has more to do with where they are born than their social class, according to new research.

A report by the independent think tank the Social Market Foundation says regions including the North East and Yorkshire have consistently under-performed.

Standards in London have risen even in poorer areas, says the report.
