Forty years of learning with the Open University

Its late night TV programmes may have been cult viewing for students and insomniacs - but the Open University pioneered the concept of long-distance learning.

Today it is the UK's largest educational institution, but 40 years ago this month, when its first intake of students received their degrees, many wondered how long the idea would last.
