University applications down by 50, 000

University applications from UK students for courses starting in the autumn are down by 50,000, compared with the previous year.

This year has seen changes to the admissions process - with universities allowed to recruit an unlimited number of students with AAB A-level grades or better.

But under the reforms, some institutions have been forced to turn away students with grades lower than AAB.

John Maguire reports.
