Crash victim says ‘bendy spine’ saved her from paralysis

A crash victim has told BBC 5 Live how her "bendy spine" saved her from paralysis.

Laura Wellington, 24, broke her back when she was hit while crossing the road by a car driven by a drunk and uninsured driver two years ago.

Doctors initially thought she wouldn't walk again but after nine days in hospital, she surprised everyone when she started to walk.

Doctors suggested it could be partly due to joint hypermobility syndrome, where the joints are more flexible than usual.

Laura said: “When the impact of the car hit me, my spine had excessive movement. I will always be thankful, as it saved me.”
