Retailers hope for last-minute rush

Retailers are hoping for a last-minute rush to boost Christmas takings.

For many, the holiday period will be critical. A survey suggests 140 shops, including independent stores and major chains, are struggling to survive. The business recovery firm, Begbies Traynor, says the number of retailers in potential trouble rose by 35% in the three months to December.

Some shops opened at midnight to try to maximise profits.

The BBC's Hugh Pym reports.
