Shapps: First-time buyers 'needing help'

The housing minister, Grant Shapps, is demanding that lenders and housebuilders give more help to first-time buyers to purchase homes.

He summoned representatives of banks, building societies and building firms to a mortgage summit today to tell them to come up with new ideas. However, Paul Broadhead from the Building Societies Association says ''funding from mortgage lenders is very, very difficult to obtain".
