Japan and China in rare earth dispute

Japan is trying to reduce its dependence on China for rare earth metals. The elements are vital for manufacturing hi-tech goods - but China has a near monopoly on supply.

Trading houses in Tokyo say shipments stopped after a Chinese trawler captain was arrested near disputed islands in the East China Sea. China, however, denies any embargo is being enforced.
