Thais celebrate ailing King Bhumibol's 84th birthday

Thousands of Thais lined the streets of Bangkok and gathered outside the Grand Palace on Monday to mark the 84th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

After 65 years on the throne, he is the world's longest reigning monarch.

He is seen as a unifying figure in the politically fractured country, and called on Thai citizens to stand together in the wake of recent flooding.

The king left hospital - where he has been staying since he was admitted with a respiratory condition more than two years ago - to attend the celebrations.

Heather Sharp reports.
