Qatar to back Greek bank merger

Help

Two of Greece's banks, Alpha and EFG Eurobank, are set to merge in a deal that will also see the injection of fresh capital, supported by Qatar.

The two Greek financial institutions will issue new shares to raise $2.5bn (£1.5bn), with the Qatar Investment Authority becoming a major shareholder in the new group.

As the BBC's Leo Kelion reports, the merger and new capital will make the banks less vulnerable to the Greece's debt crisis.
