Tepco confirms extra partial fuel rod meltdown at plant

Tokyo Electric Power, the operator of the troubled Fukushima nuclear power plant, has confirmed there were meltdowns of fuel rods at three reactors, after the earthquake and tsunami in March.

The issue of nuclear safety is being heavily scrutinised as the disaster has undermined confidence in the industry.

Nobumasa Akiyama, an associate professor at Hitotsubashi University, told the BBC's Asia Business Report that Japan will reduce its reliance on nuclear power stations.
