Shell kept in garden for a year is detonated
A device found on a diving trip a year ago and kept in a back garden has been detonated by explosives experts.
Police said the shell was found on the sea bed at Ministry of Defence-owned land off Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.
The man who found it took it home to Caverswall near Stoke-on-Trent where he kept it in his garden.
He phoned police on Monday afternoon after advice from a special constable, and officers stayed nearby overnight to "ensure public safety".
Staffordshire Police and explosive ordnance disposal experts successfully disposed of the shell.
A police spokesperson said: "The badly corroded shell, which contained a detonator, was taken to a nearby field and disposed of by controlled explosion at around 7am today [Tuesday]."
