Grey area between life and death

On October 23 2009, Richard Rudd was riding a motorcycle when he hit a car at speed.

He was found six metres away from his bike and lost the use of both arms and legs permanently.

Because of advances in treatment, he was able to be kept alive but was believed to be in a coma - until a consultant found that he was able to respond to questions by moving his eyes.

Between Life and Death is on BBC One at 2235 BST on Tuesday 13 July, on BBC HD at 0000 BST on Wednesday 14 July and afterwards on iPlayer.
