A man suffered head and spinal injuries when he fell from rocks on the North Tyneside coast.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was called to the scene at Browns Bay, near the coastal resort of Cullercoats, on Monday evening.

The 27-year-old was washed into the sea and recovered by a group of scuba divers who were returning to shore.

Paramedics made him comfortable and he was then airlifted by a rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Brigade members deployed an orange smoke flare to help the helicopter locate the scene.

No details about his condition have yet been released.
