Tributes have been paid to the leader of the Labour group on Sedgemoor District Council, who died at the weekend.

Roger Lavers, 66, was the councillor for Woolavington ward.

Councillor Jane Moreton said he was a very effective leader and a man who did not recognise weakness.

"He was a very happy and proud man - a solid member of his party - effective in council and always prepared to speak up for what he believed in," she said.

"Roger was never frightened to come forward about any small issue and fought his corner very well.

"He will be missed very much by Sedgemoor, by the councillors and staff, and the community in Woolavington that he served," she added.
