Sainsbury's sorry for delays to new Marlborough store

Sainsbury's has apologised to residents of Marlborough for delays in the town getting a new supermarket after it started a legal challenge over plans.

The supermarket called for a judicial review after Wiltshire Council chose its Tesco rival for a new store.

The company had told town planners it intended to submit plans for a store just before they were due to approve those put forward by Tesco in March.

It has now written to households in the area to explain its action.

Sainsbury's said it had asked the council to look at both sets of plans together, which it says did not happen.

Campaigners had been pushing for months for the Tesco plan to be backed as they believe it would provide a cheaper alternative to Waitrose, the only other supermarket currently in the town.
