Cornwall MP in call for rural fuel rebate trial

A Cornwall MP has called for the county to be a pilot area for fuel duty rebates.

Dan Rogerson said in a letter to Chancellor George Osborne that using a car in north Cornwall was a necessity because of "poor" public transport.

Mr Osborne's budget announcement in June included a consultation on a possible rebate on fuel taxes for people in remote rural areas.

Mr Rogerson has offered to meet the chancellor to discuss the options.

He said: "Driving in north Cornwall is a necessity since public transport links are inadequate even between the urban centres and completely non-existent when it comes to our most rural communities.

"North Cornwall would be an excellent place to start with an early pilot scheme to ensure that nationwide roll-out of a rural rebate is a success."
