Police have carried out raids in their hunt for the killer of a man found dead in his County Durham home.

Fred Shipley, 59, was discovered with serious head injuries at Paradise Crescent, Easington, on Saturday.

Durham police said they had raided addresses in Easington, Peterlee and Hartlepool and a number of items had been removed for forensic examination.

Police said he had been "vulnerable" and described the manner of his death as "appalling."

Det Supt Ken Donnelly, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are determined to identify and arrest Mr Shipley's attacker.

"The communities of Easington and Easington Colliery should be rightly appalled that a kind and decent member of their community has met his death in this way.

"A large team of detectives and supporting specialist teams are fully engaged in the hunt for Mr Shipley's attacker."
