Inquiry into claims child assaulted at Bolton mosque

Reports of assaults on a child at a mosque in Bolton are being investigated by police and the Charity Commission.

A boy was allegedly assaulted at the Zakariyya Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre in Peace Street, Bolton, in May.

A man, 20, has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of common assault on children. The Charity Commission is also investigating.

The mosque and Bolton Council of Mosques have been unavailable for comment.

'Concerns raised'

Police said their inquiries were continuing and that the arrested man had been bailed until August.

A spokeswoman for the Charity Commission said: "Concerns have been raised with the Charity Commission regarding the Islamic Cultural Centre Zakariyya Mosque Bolton.

"We have written to the charity trustees and opened an investigation in relation to the concerns raised."

The commission is investigating because the mosque is a registered charity.
