Jersey sea craft warning after swimmer 'near misses'

Jersey Coastguard has made a warning to users of sea scooters and motorised watercraft to stay clear of beaches after swimmers reported "near-misses".

It is illegal in Jersey for watercraft to exceed 5 knots when within 200 yards (182m) of the shore.

Peter Lawrence, coastguard enforcement manager, said there has been a rise in reports of watercraft coming close to swimmers and beaches.

He said legal action would be sought for those caught breaking the rule.

Mr Lawrence said: "Areas of particular concern will be monitored over the forthcoming season and if necessary enforcement action will be taken."
