Jersey caterers reminded of oil disposal over summer

Caterers on Jersey are being reminded not to put oil, grease or food waste down drains ahead of the summer season.

The States of Jersey is sending information packs to all caterers on the island advising them on best practice and oil collections.

The island's sewerage system is put under additional strain with the influx of summer visitors.

The States said that fat and oil cause pipe blockages when they harden, costing thousands of pounds to clear.

Ellen Littlechild, from the Transport and Technical Services department, said: "By raising awareness we hope to make savings by preventing unnecessary blockages to sewer pipes and avoidable work to the sewage treatment works."

A free oil collection is provided by the States of Jersey.
