An 18-year-old soldier on home leave has been stabbed in Inverclyde.

The teenager was attacked in the Clune Brae and Westfield Road area of Port Glasgow at about 0500 BST on Sunday.

He then ran down Brookfield Road onto High Carnegie Road and called emergency services. The soldier is in a "serious but stable" condition in hospital.

The suspect is described as being in his 20s, about 5ft 2in tall and of stocky build. Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

Det Con Gary Gillen, of Strathclyde Police, said: "Extensive police inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this violent attack and exactly where it took place.

"Officers are currently carrying out door-to-door inquiries and checking CCTV footage in the local area to try and gather more information.

"I would ask anyone with any information that may help police enquiries to come forward as a matter of urgency."
