A cheque for £24,500 has been handed over for the upkeep of a war memorial to soldiers from an East Sussex town.

The cash for the monument in Alexandra Park, Hastings, was raised by members of the Royal British Legion in Hastings and St Leonards over a year.

The Grade-II listed monument has been restored, and was unveiled in March.

Councillor Trevor Webb, of Hastings Borough Council, said the funds would go towards the upkeep and repair work already carried out and future work.

The structure was unveiled in 1922 to commemorate the men of Hastings and St Leonards who lost their lives during World War I.

In 1992 the names of those soldiers who died in World War II were added and the structure, designed by Rodin protege Margaret Winser, was given Grade II listing.
